Cyber-insurance readiness checklist

Before your renewal: the ten controls insurers ask about.

Cyber-insurance applications and renewals ask you to confirm specific security controls. A “no” can raise the premium, add an exclusion or mean no cover at all, and a “yes” you can't back up can become a problem if you ever need to claim. These are the ten most insurers ask about, in plain words.

The checklist

General, not any one insurer's form: carriers word the questions differently and add their own. For each control the honest answer is yes, no or not sure, and the insurer may ask you to show it.

  1. 1

    Multi-factor sign-in

On email, remote access and every administrator account, with no exceptions.

  2. 2

    Endpoint detection and response (EDR)

On every computer and server, with someone watching the alerts.

  3. 3

    Backups you can restore

Kept offline or immutable, encrypted, and restored in a test at least once a year.

  4. 4

    Patching

Critical updates on computers, servers and firewalls within a set number of days, and no unsupported systems.

  5. 5

    Email security

Filtering for phishing and malware, and SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up on your domain.

  6. 6

    Security awareness training

For all staff, with phishing tests to check it is working.

  7. 7

    Separate admin accounts

Administrator rights kept on separate accounts from everyday ones, and only for the people who need them.

  8. 8

    Secure remote access

Through a secure gateway, never remote desktop open to the internet.

  9. 9

    An incident response plan

Written down: who to call, and what happens in the first hour.

  10. 10

    Payment verification

A call-back to a known number before any change to bank details or any wire transfer.

Anything you can't answer yes to, with proof, goes on the list to fix before you sign.

What we do about it

Not sure where you stand? Send us your current insurance questionnaire. We'll mark up which items your environment satisfies, which need work, and what closing the gaps would entail, at no charge. The readiness assessment is for when you need the evidence and the plan.

The readiness assessment

The readiness assessment is our Discovery / scoping audit, aimed at your insurance application: we check each of the ten controls in your business, write down what is in place, and give you a plan for the gaps, with the evidence you can show your broker. A fixed fee, from $2,500, credited to the engagement (see pricing).

The fixes

Then we close the gaps: multi-factor sign-in, EDR with managed detection, backups, email security, staff training and the response plan, through our cybersecurity and managed IT services.

What we won't promise: cover, a premium or the outcome of a claim. Your insurer decides those. Our job is to make your answers true and give you the proof behind them.

Renewal coming up? Let's talk for 20 minutes.

Bring the application if you have one. No sales pitch: we'll go through the questions and whether an assessment makes sense for you.
